We've all heard it: the proverbial question-- "Is the glass half empty or half full?" Do you see life (the glass) as an optimist or a pessimist? Of course, we've also heard the answer-- life is what you make it. As an eternal optimist, I have always taken pride in my ability to stay positive and see the best in even the most dire of circumstances. Heck, |
But recently, I was in a bit of a funk. I wouldn't say I saw my glass as half empty, but I definitely felt like there was a leak in my cup and as hard as I tried, my little drops of positivity were slowly slipping out of my grasp. In other words-- I felt like challenge after challenge was coming my way, and these things were starting to create some negativity in my mind.
As I was driving one night, an old song came up on my iPod. Perhaps you've heard it: "Pennies From Heaven." The tune immediately cheered me, and the words changed my perspective.
A long time ago
A million years BC
The best things in life
Were absolutely free.
But no one appreciated
A sky that was always blue.
And no one congratulated
A moon that was always new.
So it was planned that they would vanish now and them
And you must pay before you get them back again.
That's what storms were made for
And you shouldn't be afraid for
Every time it rains it rains
Pennies from heaven.
Don't you know each cloud contains
Pennies from heaven.
You'll find yor fortune falling
All over town.
Be sure that your umbrella is upside down.
Trade them for a package of sunshine and flowers.
If you want the things you love
You must have showers.
So when you hear it thunder
Don't run under a tree.
There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me."
Sometimes, when your glass seems leaky, it's hard to keep the glass-half-full outlook. I'm so thankful for my recent reminder that the storms are just as important in our journey as the sunshine, and that each rain drop that a storm deposits will only help fill our glass in the long run.
What about you-- how do you keep your positive attitude when things are stormy? Is there a song or saying that helps you keep perspective when you are facing challenges? I hope you'll share!
