It's that time of year again: the time for high school and college students to prepare for graduation and gear up for their next step in life... whatever it may be. Thinking back to my own high school, college and even graduate school commencement ceremonies, I recall the overwhelming feeling-- each time-- that I was somehow unprepared for that next step. I was unsure of the path I was on and worried that I wouldn't achieve the success I was hoping for. And so now, with the benefit of hindsight, |
I would venture a guess that many of you enjoy things that are thrilling. Riding a roller coaster. Driving a fast car. Experiencing something exhilarating, something that makes you feel alive. As you graduate, I hope you are exhilarated thinking about the endless possibilities that are open to you in your future.
But I’d also like you to think back. Take a minute to recall a time from your high school, college or graduate career when you struggled to imagine that you could reach graduation. Some obstacle stood in your way, some achievement seemed inconceivable, some challenge seemed insurmountable. Yet you made it. You made it!
As you move on to the next step in your life, remember something. Life is a thrill ride. Just like a roller coaster, life will bring you to the highest of peaks, and it will bring you the lowest of lows.
Remember this as you move forward. When things are at their worst, they can only get better, and when things are at their best, remember how the struggles you overcame helped you get there. Whether your next step is college, a career or simply 'to be determined,' I hope you will look into your heart and find what thrills you, what exhilarates you—and follow that path.
And don’t forget to say thank you to those who help you along the way. You have conquered your struggles and reached your successes with the support of friends, family members, coaches, neighbors-- perhaps even a few kind, friendly strangers! All of these people have played a role in helping you reach this milestone.
Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t—you’re right.” You deserve hearty congratulations. You believed in yourself and stayed committed to your path, and you are now a success story! As life continues, carry that spirit with you. You have shown what you are capable of—now it’s time for you to forge your own path and create your own legacy.
NOW COME ON, DISH! Do you remember your own high school or college graduation? How about another transitional period in your life? How did you feel? If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what words would you share?
