I recently learned a valuable life lesson: if ever you want to feel like an A-list celebrity, give a first grader a high five. I was in the middle of interviewing a student at an elementary school (for work) when a curious first grader approached. Seeing my ID badge, he enthusiastically shouted "Hi, Karin!" and proceeded to hold his hand out for a high five. Not wanting to disrupt focus |
But this interaction made me infinitely happier as I headed off to face the rest of my day. And it made me appreciate the need for the childlike enthusiasm and wonder that so many of us are missing in our day to day lives.
Is there an event that brings you that sense of childlike excitement and joy? For me, it's the holiday season. There's little that I love more than snuggling up in my pjs with a cup of hot chocolate in front of the fire and watching the snow fall, Christmas lights hung around the windows… seeing the hustle and bustle of people thoughtfully shopping for the perfect gifts for loved ones… everything about the holidays feels magical to me.
But my recent exchange of high fives reminded me of the importance of finding joy and excitement in every day-- not just one season. It's a struggle to do this-- balancing work, family, real-world responsibilities often zaps us of our enthusiasm… but it is absolutely necessary to living a full life.
In recent months, I've found that whenever I need a pick-me-up, doing something nice for someone else sends a shot of joy through me. Just like the high fives I received from those children put a smile on my face and a spring in my step, smiling at others or complimenting a stranger has the ability to do the same.
NOW COME ON, DISH! What is it that brings you joy in the mundane, everyday tasks? Have you had an "aha" moment recently that reminded you of the power of a single act of happiness? I hope you'll share!
