In 2014, rather than make a New Years Resolution, I decided to focus my actions each day around the word sincerity. I wanted to learn to live a life that was true to me-- and that would allow me to be confident in knowing that I am creating a legacy of kindness. As I rang in 2015, I pondered what I could add to my 'better me' arsenal. And so, like any good creative type, I hauled out some magazines and started cutting out words, |
How do I balance the life of quiet kindness I have created with such a bold concept as power?
Upon further reflection, this really is a fitting goal, now that I think about it. In recent months, I have become increasingly frustrated with the pressures society places on women-- to appear young, pretty, to be-- so it seems society is saying-- perfect. And I have been inspired to see high-profile women (of varying ages) fighting these pressures.
From Emma Watson's impassioned speech on equal rights at the United Nations to Amy Poehler's 'Smart Girls' website that encourages women to 'change the world by being yourself,' to the countless celebrities who came to Renee Zellweger's defense after rumors of alleged plastic surgery surfaced, I have felt a twinge of envy. I want to be as powerful, unapologetic, outspoken and self-confident as these women, I would think.
And so, as the new year begins, I look forward to "showing them who's boss," living with "no rules," "ruling the day" and "being an inspiration." I'm not sure how this quest will play out, but I'm sure up for the challenge!
Now, COME ON, DISH! Who or what has encouraged you to be more powerful and self-confident in the way you live your life? When is the last time you made an inspiration board? What would the theme of yours be for this new year? I'd love to hear!
