Let me be clear: I'm not a die-hard sports fan. I'm not familiar with the Cowboys (aside from knowing their cheerleaders are a pretty big deal). In fact, I could barely explain the rules of football. This trip was purely out of curiosity, and because I thought it was one of the "most Dallas" things I could see while I was in town.
That being said, let me tell you: this stadium was spectacular (with a $1.2 billion price tag, it had ought to be, but still...)! If a team/stadium is interesting enough to pique my interest, I decided maybe I should take that as a sign. And that is how my sports fan portfolio (currently somewhat lacking, with only 'Syracuse basketball' on the short list) was expanded. I decided on the spot (or, more accurately, on the star) that I now had a connection to this team, and I would become a fan. |
Fast forward to this week.
Alex informs me that his team (Chargers) will be playing my team (Cowboys). The result? Approximately 5 minutes of (on my part) quite embarrassing trash talking. Some advice: trashing a football team is quite difficult when you know next to nothing about said team, its players or the game itself. Our exchange went something like this:
A: My team made the Championship last year.
K: Well my team is going to WIN the Championship this year.
A: My team has gotten better in the off season.
K: My team is going to be even better IN season.
A: My team is respected. We're the (Anchorman accent) San-Diegans.
K: My team is AMERICA'S team. WE PLAY ON THANKSGIVING. EVERY YEAR. If you shun my team, you shun America. WHAT KIND OF AMERICAN ARE YOU?
Regardless, I'm excited to expand my horizons and learn more about football (yes, even though several friends have already passionately expressed why I should have picked a team, any team, other than the Cowboys).
Now COME ON, DISH! Have you ever picked up a new interest out of pure curiosity? Is there a better activity in Dallas I should try next time I'm in town? Who's your NFL team (there has to be at least one other person who is rooting for my Cowboys)?
